Learn To Skate
Get Started with Our PRE-CAN/CANSKATE Program
PreCan/CanSkate focuses on learning the essential skating skills needed to partake figure skating, hockey, or recreational skating in the future. CanSkate is designed for children, ages 3+ with little or some skating experience. CanSkate is a nationally approved and tested curriculum through Skate Canada that builds skill development and confidence on the ice.
Where to Start and Next Steps
Canskate is a starting point that leads to either figure skating or hockey.
If you are interested in figure skating, please contact us to get yourself set up with a private coach who will steer you through the next steps.
If you are interested in hockey, please contact us to get enrolled in the next session of Chipmunks hockey and learn the required fundamentals to play the game.
Who Qualifies for Pre-CanSkate vs CanSkate Programs?
Pre-CanSkate lessons are for beginners 3-5 with little to no skating experience.
CanSkate lessons are for beginners 5+ as well as for those looking to improve their basic skills. These sessions are a foundation for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or recreational skating. Students progress through stages as they gain skills and experience.
What Will Skaters Learn?
A complete series of balance, control, and agility skills taught in six stages of learning. These skills translate well to hockey, ringette, speed skating, and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses nationally-tested and proven curriculum to guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills. The curriculum is designed to help skaters develop their basic skills faster. Through various circuits your skater will learn the basics of skating while making friends and having fun!
What Equipment is needed for Pre/CanSkate programs?
- Helmet: CSA-approved helmets are mandatory for all CanSkaters.
- Skates: We recommend “lace-up” skates as they provide the best support, allow proper movement, and accommodate an adjustable fit. The skate’s boot must be firm and must provide good support to the foot and ankle.
- Warm clothing: Skaters should dress warmly and comfortably in layers to enjoy their skating experience. Snow pants or nylon pants over top of layers of clothing are a good idea as they provide warmth and dryness during the session.
